Shazzle by Shazia Naik

Something really special is brewing in the world of fashion and it’s happening at the label Shazzle by Shazia Naik. This young, Mumbai-based designer debuted at Bangalore Fashion Week 2016 – Winter Festive Edition. She showcased her collection ‘Reflections’* and we were simply blown away by her work. Of all the designers we have learnt about and discovered in 2016, Shazia Naik continues to be our favorite. And her label Shazzle is a perfect amalgamation of quirk and vibrance.

The fluidity of her inspiration for this particular collection – the sea – seamlessly transcends into her designs; free flowing fabrics such as satin and light sheer, integration of florals along with the pastel sea blue hue, and hints of dark colors were the key elements of this stunning collection.

Shazia’s sense of style is enviably chic and refreshingly unique. These two elements combined with oodles of creativity and passion set her apart from many new entrants coming into the extremely competitive western wear segment. By the end of this post, you may just find yourself nodding along with us in agreement with regards to this claim! Shazia Naik’s design philosophy is casual, effortless fashion. She believes that looking glamorous, confident and sexy should be an effortless endeavor and every single creation of Shazzle deliverers on this philosophy.

In all the chaos that fashion week was, Shazia was kind enough to take a few minutes to chat with us and tell us more about this collection and her label. Below are the excerpts of our interview:

TGSE: How did you get started in the fashion industry?  SN: I am graduate in Business Management with no background in fashion but I’ve always been a fashion enthusiast. I used to make extra effort to dress well even when I was a little girl. I started working for Vogue and handled digital media and ad sales and also got the opportunity to cover a few segments for Lakme Fashion Week. Upon completing my post-graduation in Fashion Business Management from Parson’s, I decided to take the leap and establish my own label.

TGSE: Tell us more about your collection? SN: This collection features pieces that are extremely intricate and highly detail-oriented. I design my own patterns and prints. Since my focus is western wear, a lot of extensive research in terms of textures and fabrics is involved. It’s important that everything is light-weight and casual, but also exudes glamour at the same time.

TGSE: Who is your inspiration? SN: My inspiration is Mary Katrantzou, a UK based designer. I admire her work as she makes her own patterns and integrates them into her designs.

TGSE: What’s your advise for budding designers or anyone wanting to take up fashion as a career? SN: If fashion is where your true passion lies, then just make the leap. Even if you have no background in fashion, you will figure things out as you go along.

TGSE: What are your plans for Shazzle? SN: At the moment, my focus is to make Shazzle available pan-India and I am evaluating a few options (especially online) to make this possible.

As a millennial designing for the generation she represents, Shazia knows exactly what this demographic wants. Shazzle’s designs resonate with this generation’s affinity with strength, independence and sense of self. And, for this very reason, this label is going to go places. We can’t wait to see what’s next for Shazzle and the brilliant mind behind this label.
